Towering over the Coral Sea on the dry, windswept coast south of Townsville, Mount Elliot is the rugged centrepiece of Bowling Green Bay National Park. This 1,342-metre peak is cloaked in tropical rainforest on its eastern slopes and open eucalypt woodland on the west, creating a dramatic contrast. For adventurous travellers, it offers a challenging full-day hike with sweeping views of the Great Barrier Reef islands and the surrounding coastal plain. The area is also a haven for birdlife, including the elusive cassowary, and its secluded beaches provide a wild, uncrowded escape.
Highlights & What to See
- Mount Elliot Summit Trail – A strenuous 17 km return trek that climbs through vine thickets and hoop pines to a rocky summit with 360-degree views of the reef and hinterland. Allow 7–9 hours and carry plenty of water.
- Alligator Creek – A popular swimming and picnic spot at the park’s southern entrance, with clear, cool water and a short walk to a waterfall. Watch for freshwater crocodiles basking on the banks.
- Cape Cleveland Lighthouse – A historic 1879 lighthouse perched on a headland north of the mountain, accessible via a 4WD track. The surrounding area offers excellent whale-watching from June to September.
- Bowling Green Bay wetlands – A Ramsar-listed site teeming with migratory waders, magpie geese and brolgas. The best viewing is from the nearby Bruce Highway lookout or a short boardwalk.
- Secluded beaches – Remote stretches such as Balgal Beach and the mouth of Alligator Creek offer quiet spots for beachcombing and birdwatching, with the mountain as a dramatic backdrop.
Suggested Time to Spend
Dedicate a full day for the summit hike if you’re fit and well-prepared. Otherwise, a half-day is enough to enjoy Alligator Creek and the wetlands. Most visitors base themselves in Townsville (45 minutes north) and make Mount Elliot a day trip, combining it with a visit to Magnetic Island or the Great Barrier Reef. Overnight camping is not permitted on the mountain itself, but there are basic campsites at Alligator Creek and nearby Cape Cleveland.
