Charters Towers, a former gold-rush boomtown in North Queensland, is a living museum of Victorian-era architecture and Wild West spirit. Today it's a relaxed country town where you can pan for gold, explore underground mines, and soak up the stories of the 1870s gold rush that once made it Queensland's second-largest city. The wide streets are lined with ornate pubs and civic buildings, and the surrounding landscape of eucalypt woodlands and dry riverbeds hints at the hardy life of the miners who flocked here.
Highlights & What to See
- Zara Clark Museum – Housed in a former bank, this museum packs in everything from Aboriginal artefacts to gold nuggets, with a fascinating re-created miner's cottage out back.
- Venus Gold Battery – See the only surviving ten-head stamp battery in Queensland still in working order; you can watch it crush ore and even try your hand at gold panning.
- Stock Exchange Arcade – Wander through this beautifully restored arcade that once buzzed with gold speculators; now it's home to a gallery and café.
- Towers Hill – The site of the original gold discovery offers panoramic views over town and a short walk past old mine workings and interpretive panels.
- Charters Towers Courthouse – An imposing 1880s sandstone building that still functions as a court; its grand interior is worth a peek on weekdays.
- Ghost Tours – Join a lantern-lit tour of the town's historic pubs and buildings, where stories of restless spirits and gold-rush tragedies abound.
Suggested Time to Spend
Two full days is ideal to see the main sights without rushing. Day one: explore the museum, Venus Gold Battery, and a self-guided walk of the historic centre. Day two: drive out to Towers Hill and perhaps try your luck panning at a designated spot. If you're short on time, a single day can cover the highlights, but you'll miss the slower pace and the chance to chat with locals in the pubs.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Hughenden – About 200 km west, this outback town is a gateway to the rugged Porcupine Gorge and its dramatic sandstone cliffs.
- Townsville – The coastal hub 130 km east is perfect for a beach and reef break after the inland dust, with Magnetic Island a short ferry ride away.
- Undara Volcanic National Park – Around 200 km south-west, the park's lava tubes and ancient volcanic landscape make for a memorable day trip.
- Great Basalt Wall National Park – A lesser-known gem west of Charters Towers, where a massive wall of basalt boulders creates a unique ecosystem.
