Bowling Green Bay National Park is a stunning coastal reserve in North Queensland, where lush tropical rainforest meets the turquoise waters of the Coral Sea. This park offers a pristine wilderness experience, with secluded beaches, granite outcrops, and dramatic mountain views. It's a paradise for hikers and nature lovers, with excellent birdwatching and the chance to explore diverse ecosystems from mangroves to eucalypt forests.
Highlights & What to See
- Mount Elliot Summit Track – A challenging full-day hike (14 km return) through rainforest and granite slopes to panoramic views of the coast and hinterland. Best tackled early morning to avoid heat.
- Alligator Creek swimming hole – A cool, crystal-clear freshwater pool perfect for a refreshing dip after a walk. Surrounded by rainforest, it's a serene spot for a picnic.
- Bowling Green Bay beach – A long, undeveloped stretch of sand fringed by dunes and casuarinas. Ideal for a peaceful stroll or birdwatching, but swimming is not advised due to crocs and stingers.
- Birdwatching – Spot white-bellied sea eagles, rainbow bee-eaters, and the rare red goshawk in the park's diverse habitats.
- Granite outcrops and wildflowers – The park's exposed granite boulders and spring wildflower displays (June–September) are a highlight for photographers.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan at least a full day to experience the park's highlights. For a rewarding hike, start the Mount Elliot Summit Track by 7 am to finish before the heat, then cool off at Alligator Creek. If you have only half a day, focus on the Alligator Creek area with a short walk and swim. Overnight camping is possible (permit required), ideal for those wanting a multi-day nature escape.
