Magnetic Island, just a 20-minute ferry ride from Townsville in North Queensland, is a sun-drenched slice of paradise where wild koalas outnumber people and fringing reefs meet granite boulder beaches. With its laid-back island vibe, abundant wildlife, and easy accessibility, it's a perfect escape for nature lovers and beach bums alike.
Highlights & What to See
- Horseshoe Bay – The island's main hub, with a sweeping curve of golden sand, calm swimming waters, and a lively row of cafés and bars. Hire a kayak or stand-up paddleboard here.
- Forts Walk – A 4km return trail through eucalypt forest to World War II gun emplacements. It's the best place on the island to spot wild koalas in the trees – keep your eyes peeled.
- Alma Bay & Geoffrey Bay – Two stunning, protected coves perfect for swimming, snorkelling, and picnicking. Geoffrey Bay has an artificial reef with turtles and colourful fish.
- Bungalow Bay Koala Village – Get up close to koalas, wombats, and reptiles in a wildlife sanctuary setting. You can also stay in the on-site eco-accommodation.
- Magnetic Island National Park – Covering more than half the island, it offers a network of walking trails, secluded beaches like Radical Bay, and lookouts with sweeping views of the Coral Sea.
Suggested Time to Spend
Magnetic Island works brilliantly as a day trip from Townsville – arrive early and you can easily squeeze in the Forts Walk, a swim, and lunch. But to truly unwind, spend 2–3 nights. That gives you time to explore the national park at leisure, snorkel multiple bays, and watch the sunset from a deckchair at Horseshoe Bay. A car isn't necessary; the island's bus service and hired Mokes (mini cars) or scooters get you around.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Townsville – The gateway city, with its own attractions: the Museum of Tropical Queensland, Strand beach, and the Great Barrier Reef departure point.
- Great Barrier Reef – Many reef tours depart from Townsville, offering snorkelling and diving on the outer reef.
- Paluma Range National Park – A lush, cool-weather escape in the mountains, with rainforest walks and swimming holes – about an hour's drive north of Townsville.
- Hinchinbrook Island – A wilder, more remote island experience with the famous Thorsborne Trail – a multi-day hiking challenge.
- Charters Towers – A historic gold-rush town with a well-preserved 19th-century streetscape, about 1.5 hours inland.
