Maitland Bay is a secluded coastal gem within Bouddi National Park on the Central Coast of NSW, offering a perfect blend of serene beaches, dramatic coastal walks, and rich Aboriginal heritage. This sheltered bay, with its clear waters and sandy shore, is a favourite for kayaking, snorkelling, and picnicking away from crowds.
Highlights & What to See
- Maitland Bay Beach – A peaceful, patrolled beach ideal for swimming, with calm waters protected by the headlands.
- Bouddi Coastal Walk – A stunning 8 km section of this track passes through coastal heath and offers panoramic views over the bay; keep an eye out for whales during migration (May–November).
- The Wreck of the SS Maitland – At low tide, you can see the remains of this 1898 shipwreck near the southern end of the beach.
- Putty Beach – A short walk north, this quieter beach is a great spot for a picnic or a swim.
- Bouddi National Park Aboriginal Sites – Explore middens and rock engravings along the walk, evidence of the local Darkinjung people’s long connection to this land.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a half-day here, which allows for a relaxed beach visit and a short section of the coastal walk. If you want to hike the full Bouddi Coastal Walk (which can be done as a one-way trip with a car shuffle or bus), plan for a full day. Combine with a picnic lunch – there are no cafés directly on the beach.
