Vast, shallow and startlingly beautiful, Lake Woods is a remote ephemeral wetland in the Northern Territory's Barkly Tableland. After good rains, this enormous lake — one of Australia's largest freshwater systems when full — transforms into a dazzling inland sea teeming with birdlife. For travellers venturing between Tennant Creek and the Queensland border, it offers a raw, outback experience far from the crowds.
Highlights & What to See
- Birdwatching bonanza: Lake Woods is a magnet for waterbirds, including magpie geese, pelicans, brolgas, and the rare Australian painted snipe. Bring binoculars and a spotting scope.
- Sunset over the lake: The vast, flat landscape means spectacular sunsets — the shallow water reflects fiery oranges and pinks across the horizon.
- Fishing for barramundi: When the lake is full, it offers excellent barramundi fishing. Check local conditions before heading out.
- Camping under the stars: Several basic bush camps dot the shoreline, offering a true outback camping experience with phenomenal night skies.
- Barkly Tableland scenery: The drive to the lake crosses classic red-soil Mitchell grass plains, with occasional cattle stations and termite mounds — pure Australian outback.
Suggested Time to Spend
Lake Woods is a destination to soak in slowly. Most visitors come for a day trip from Tennant Creek (about 1.5 hours north), but to truly appreciate the birdlife and solitude, plan for an overnight camp. Two days and one night is ideal: arrive in the late afternoon for sunset, enjoy a morning of birdwatching and fishing, then head out. If you're passing through on the Barkly Highway, a short two-hour stop is worthwhile for a picnic and a walk along the shore.
