Elliott is a tiny, sun‑baked stop on the Stuart Highway, deep in the Northern Territory's red‑centre. For travellers on the long haul between Darwin and Alice Springs, this outpost is a welcome oasis — a place to refuel, stretch your legs, and feel the immense silence of the Barkly Tableland. Don't expect tourist glitz; Elliott is genuine outback, where the pub is the social hub and the star‑filled night sky is the main attraction.
Highlights & What to See
- Elliott Hotel (Front Bar): The town's beating heart. Grab a cold beer, chat with locals, and soak up the classic outback pub atmosphere. The beer garden out back is perfect for evening drinks as the sun sets.
- Longreach Waterhole: A permanent billabong on the Newcastle Creek, about 15 km west of town. It's a serene spot for birdwatching, fishing for barramundi, or simply floating in the cool water — a rare treat in this arid landscape.
- Koolendong Waterhole: Another peaceful creek-side spot, ideal for a picnic or a swim. Look for freshwater crocodiles basking on the banks (they're harmless if left alone).
- Barkly Tableland Scenery: The vast, grassy plains stretching to the horizon are a sight in themselves. Stop at the Elliott Tourist Information Centre for maps and local tips on the best spots to appreciate the endless skies.
- Stargazing: With almost zero light pollution, Elliott offers some of the darkest skies in Australia. On a moonless night, the Milky Way is a brilliant river of stars.
Suggested Time to Spend
Elliott is a stopover, not a destination. Plan to arrive in the late afternoon, spend the night, and leave the next morning. That gives you time for a swim at Longreach Waterhole, a cold beer at the pub, and a night of spectacular stargazing. If you're driving the Stuart Highway, it's a perfect halfway point between Tennant Creek (2 hours south) and Daly Waters (2 hours north).
