In the heart of the Northern Territory's red centre, Tennant Creek is a dusty outback town with a rich mining history and a gateway to some of Australia's most remote and striking landscapes. Once the site of a gold rush, today it offers travellers a genuine outback experience, from exploring ancient rock formations to learning about local Aboriginal culture. The town itself is small but welcoming, with a handful of pubs, a bakery, and a surprising arts scene.
Highlights & What to See
- Nyinkka Nyunyu Art and Culture Centre: A must-visit for an immersive introduction to the Warumungu people's culture, with contemporary art, artefacts, and a bush tucker garden.
- Devil's Marbles (Karlu Karlu): Just 100 km south of town, this sacred site features enormous granite boulders balanced precariously, especially magical at sunrise or sunset.
- Battery Hill Mining Centre: Tour a historic gold battery and head underground into a former mine to feel the claustrophobic conditions of the gold rush era.
- Lake Mary Ann: A peaceful waterhole on the edge of town, perfect for a swim or picnic, especially after a long drive.
- Kunjarra (The Pebbles): These striking red rock formations just north of town are a sacred women's site and offer a short walking trail with panoramic views.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most travellers spend one night in Tennant Creek, using it as a stopover on the Stuart Highway between Alice Springs (500 km south) and Katherine (700 km north). If you have a full day, you can comfortably visit the Devil's Marbles for sunrise, explore the mining centre in the morning, and wander the art centre in the afternoon. For a deeper experience, consider two nights to also explore the Davenport Ranges or do a longer walk at Karlu Karlu.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Devil's Marbles (Karlu Karlu): The top attraction in the region, just an hour's drive south.
- Davenport Ranges National Park: A rugged, less-visited park with gorges and waterholes, ideal for 4WD enthusiasts.
- Elliott: A tiny roadhouse town 250 km north, known for its fishing on the Newcastle Creek.
- Alice Springs: The red centre's hub, 500 km south, with the famous Larapinta Trail and Alice Springs Desert Park.
- Katherine: Home to Nitmiluk (Katherine Gorge), 700 km north, a stunning network of sandstone gorges.
