Tennant Creek

In the heart of the Northern Territory's red centre, Tennant Creek is a dusty outback town with a rich mining history and a gateway to some of Australia's most remote and striking landscapes. Once the site of a gold rush, today it offers travellers a genuine outback experience, from exploring ancient rock formations to learning about local Aboriginal culture. The town itself is small but welcoming, with a handful of pubs, a bakery, and a surprising arts scene.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most travellers spend one night in Tennant Creek, using it as a stopover on the Stuart Highway between Alice Springs (500 km south) and Katherine (700 km north). If you have a full day, you can comfortably visit the Devil's Marbles for sunrise, explore the mining centre in the morning, and wander the art centre in the afternoon. For a deeper experience, consider two nights to also explore the Davenport Ranges or do a longer walk at Karlu Karlu.
