Lady Musgrave Island is a pristine coral cay on the southern Great Barrier Reef, offering some of Queensland’s most accessible reef experiences. This uninhabited island, part of the Capricornia Cays National Park, is ringed by turquoise lagoon waters and fringed by coral gardens teeming with marine life. With no accommodation on the island, it’s a pure day-trip paradise where you snorkel with sea turtles, explore the lagoon by glass-bottom boat, and walk among nesting seabirds.
Highlights & What to See
- Snorkel the Lagoon: The protected lagoon is a nursery for marine life – swim alongside green sea turtles, colourful parrotfish, and graceful manta rays in crystal-clear water.
- Glass-Bottom Boat Tours: Peer into the coral gardens without getting wet; guides point out giant clams, anemonefish, and the intricate coral bommies.
- Island Walk & Birdlife: A short trail crosses the cay to the far beach, passing nesting colonies of black noddies, silver gulls, and the occasional white-capped noddy.
- Lady Musgrave Experience: This combined tour from 1770 or Bundaberg includes reef snorkelling, island time, and a seafood lunch – the most popular way to visit.
- Reef & Turtle Education: Onboard marine biologists share insights about the reef ecosystem and the island’s turtle tagging program.
Suggested Time to Spend
Lady Musgrave Island is exclusively a day trip – tours depart early morning (around 7–8am) and return by late afternoon (4–5pm). The journey by catamaran takes about 1.5–2 hours each way. You’ll typically have 3–4 hours on and around the island, which is ample time for a guided snorkel, a glass-bottom boat ride, and a leisurely walk across the cay. If you’re a keen snorkeller, prioritise the lagoon time. Most visitors find a single day sufficient to soak up the reef’s highlights.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
