La Paloma is a tranquil coastal hamlet on the New South Wales far south coast, where the Sapphire Coast meets the wild Tasman Sea. With its uncrowded beaches, lush national park backdrop, and a laid-back fishing-village vibe, it’s the kind of place where you can spend days doing very little – and feel like you’ve done everything. The main draw is the pristine coastline and the opportunity to spot migrating whales (May–November) from the headlands.
Highlights & What to See
- Mimosa Rocks National Park – A coastal wilderness of sea caves, blowholes, and secluded beaches like Bithry Inlet and Aragunnu. Walk the 2.5km Picnic Point track for panoramic views.
- Whale-watching from the headland – The La Paloma headland offers front-row seats for humpback and southern right whale migrations. Bring binoculars and a picnic.
- Wapengo Lake – A peaceful estuary perfect for kayaking, paddleboarding, or fishing for flathead and bream. Launch from the boat ramp near the bridge.
- Baragoot Beach – A sweeping, uncrowded stretch of sand ideal for long walks, birdwatching, and swimming when conditions are calm.
- Local seafood – The Tathara Point Seafoods food van (seasonal) serves fresh fish and chips with a view; otherwise, stock up at the Bermagui Fishermen’s Co-op.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors base themselves here for 2–3 days, which allows a full day exploring Mimosa Rocks National Park, a morning kayaking on Wapengo Lake, and a relaxed afternoon whale-watching. If you’re short on time, a single overnight stop gives you a sunset walk on Baragoot Beach and a morning hike. The area is best enjoyed at a slow pace – don’t try to rush it.
