La Angostura is a sleepy, sun-baked hamlet in the northern reaches of New South Wales, where the Gwydir River narrows into a rocky gorge and the pace of life slows to a lazy crawl. This is the outback you imagine: rust-red earth, skeletal river red gums, and a sky so big it feels like you can see the curve of the earth. The main draw is the river itself, a magnet for birdlife and a blissful spot for a paddle or a picnic. For travellers on a self-drive journey, La Angostura is a quiet interlude between the more famous towns of the New England region – a place to stretch your legs, cast a line, and soak up the profound stillness of the Australian bush.
Highlights & What to See
- Gwydir River Gorge: The river narrows dramatically here, creating a series of deep, clear pools. It’s a top spot for a refreshing swim or to try your luck fishing for Murray cod and yellowbelly.
- La Angostura Weir & Picnic Area: A small weir creates a broad, calm stretch of water, perfect for kayaking or canoeing. The shaded picnic tables make it an ideal lunch stop.
- Birdwatching: Keep an eye out for white-bellied sea eagles, azure kingfishers, and a cacophony of cockatoos. The river corridor is a lifeline for wildlife in this arid landscape.
- Walking Tracks: Short trails lead along the riverbanks and up onto the rocky escarpments, offering panoramic views of the gorge and the surrounding bush.
- Stargazing: With virtually no light pollution, La Angostura is a dark-sky haven. On a clear night, the Milky Way arcs overhead in spectacular detail.
Suggested Time to Spend
La Angostura is a stopover rather than a destination. Most travellers spend 1–2 hours here, enough for a swim, a short walk, and a picnic. If you’re a keen angler or birdwatcher, you might happily while away half a day. It works best as a break on the drive between Moree (about 45 minutes north) and Inverell (about an hour south-east). There’s no accommodation in the hamlet itself, so plan to stay in one of the larger towns nearby.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Moree: Famous for its artesian hot springs and rich agricultural history – a great place to soak tired muscles after a day on the road.
- Inverell: Known as the ‘Sapphire City’, this is a hub for fossicking (you can try your luck at sapphire and zircon gems) and exploring the Macintyre River.
- Copeton Dam: A huge inland lake about 40 minutes south-east, popular for water sports, camping, and yabbying.
- Bundarra: A tiny historic village with a lovely old pub and a scenic riverside reserve – perfect for a quiet beer and a chat with locals.
- Gwydir River National Park: Further downstream, this protected area offers more rugged bushwalking and remote camping along the river.
