Kondalilla National Park, tucked into the Blackall Range of the Sunshine Coast hinterland, is a lush pocket of subtropical rainforest, cascading creeks and dramatic waterfalls. The park’s name comes from the Aboriginal word for ‘rushing water’ — and you’ll hear it long before you see it. This is a place of cool, green stillness broken by the thunder of Kondalilla Falls, where the Skene Creek plunges 90 metres into a rocky pool. It’s a favourite with hikers, picnickers and anyone craving a dip in a natural swimming hole surrounded by ancient trees.
Highlights & What to See
- Kondalilla Falls — The park’s centrepiece: a 90-metre cascade that thunders into a deep rock pool. The viewing platform offers a postcard-perfect perspective, and in summer you can swim in the cool waters below (check current conditions).
- Picnic Creek Circuit — A 4.8 km loop that winds through rainforest and open eucalypt forest, crossing several creeks and passing the base of the falls. Allow 1.5–2 hours for this moderately graded walk.
- Kondalilla Falls Circuit — A shorter 2.6 km walk (about 1 hour) that leads to the top of the falls and a lookout over the valley. Ideal if you’re short on time but still want the classic view.
- Swimming Holes — The rock pools along Skene Creek, especially at the base of the falls, are perfect for a refreshing dip. Remember that water levels and currents can change; always swim with care.
- Birdwatching & Wildlife — Keep an eye out for satin bowerbirds, crimson rosellas, and if you’re lucky, a platypus in the quieter sections of the creek.
Suggested Time to Spend
You can experience the park’s highlights in a half-day visit. Arrive early to secure a picnic table and enjoy the cooler morning air. For the full experience, plan 3–4 hours to walk the Picnic Creek Circuit, swim, and have a leisurely lunch. If you’re combining it with other Sunshine Coast hinterland attractions, a morning or afternoon here slots easily into a day trip from the coast.

- Mapleton Falls National Park — Just 15 minutes north, this smaller park offers another dramatic waterfall and a short lookout walk.
- Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve — Near Maleny, this reserve protects a patch of ancient rainforest with boardwalks and a fantastic interpretation centre.
- Sunshine Coast Beaches — The park is only about 30 minutes from the coast, so you can easily combine a bushwalk with a swim at Noosa Main Beach or Mooloolaba.
