Perched on the Blackall Range in the Sunshine Coast hinterland, Maleny is the kind of place that makes you want to slow down and breathe deeply. The air is cool and scented with eucalyptus, the views stretch across rolling green hills to the Glass House Mountains, and the main street is lined with artisan bakeries, bookshops, and galleries. It’s a haven for foodies, nature lovers, and anyone craving a dose of country charm without the crowds.
Highlights & What to See
- Maleny Botanic Gardens & Bird World – Stroll through 10 acres of themed gardens, then wander into the walk-through aviary where colourful lorikeets and parrots land on your shoulder. The backdrop of the Glass House Mountains is pure magic.
- Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve – A pocket of ancient rainforest with a boardwalk that winds through towering piccabeen palms. The Rainforest Discovery Centre has excellent interpretive displays, and the café serves lunch with a view.
- Maleny Dairy – A working farm where you can meet the cows and sample award-winning cheeses. The creamery shop sells fresh curds, cheddar, and the creamiest milk you’ll ever taste.
- Maleny Art & Craft Trail – Follow the self-guided trail to studios and galleries showcasing local pottery, paintings, and woodwork. Pick up a hand-thrown mug as a memento.
- Gardners Falls – A short walk from town leads to a series of swimming holes and cascades. In summer, it’s the perfect spot for a cool dip surrounded by lush forest.
Suggested Time to Spend
Maleny rewards a relaxed pace. Spend one full day to hit the main sights: morning at the Botanic Gardens, lunch in town, then an afternoon at Mary Cairncross. If you can, add a second day to explore the hinterland villages, hike in Kondalilla National Park, or simply linger over a long lunch with a view. The vibe here is unhurried, so don’t cram it.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Montville – Just 10 minutes north, this Swiss-inspired village is packed with boutiques, fudge shops, and a famous clock shop. It’s kitschy but fun.
- Kondalilla National Park – A 15-minute drive brings you to the park’s centrepiece: Kondalilla Falls, a 90-metre cascade that plunges into a deep swimming hole. The 4.6km circuit walk is a must-do.
- Mapleton Falls National Park – A quieter cousin to Kondalilla, with a lookout over the 120-metre Mapleton Falls and a picnic area where you can hear the roar of the water.
- Sunshine Coast Beaches – Maleny is only 40 minutes from the coast, so you can easily combine a hinterland day with an afternoon at Noosa Main Beach or Mooloolaba.
- Kenilworth – A tiny town to the north, home to the Kenilworth Cheese Factory and the start of the Conondale Range Great Walk. It’s off the beaten path and utterly charming.
