Kalbarri National Park, on Western Australia’s Coral Coast, is a dramatic landscape where the Murchison River has carved a deep red gorge through ancient sandstone. The park’s raw beauty, from coastal cliffs to inland river gorges, offers some of the state’s most striking scenery. It’s a haven for hikers, wildlife watchers, and anyone craving big skies and a sense of isolation.
Highlights & What to See
- The Loop & Z-Bend Gorge – The park’s most famous walks: the 8 km Loop takes you to the edge of the gorge with heart-stopping views, while the shorter Z-Bend lookout peers into a spectacular river bend. For the adventurous, the Z-Bend River Trail descends into the gorge itself.
- Nature’s Window – This iconic natural rock arch frames the Murchison River gorge perfectly. It’s an easy 800 m walk from the car park and is an absolute must for photos, especially in the golden hours.
- Coastal Cliffs – The park’s western edge features dramatic sea cliffs, blowholes, and rock formations. The Coastal Cliffs drive offers several lookouts, including Red Bluff, Pot Alley, and Eagle Gorge, where you can spot whales during migration (June–November).
- Wildflowers & Wildlife – In spring (August–October), the park bursts with everlastings and other wildflowers. Look for emus, kangaroos, and a huge variety of birdlife, including wedge-tailed eagles and honeyeaters.
- Murchison River Gorge – For a different perspective, consider a scenic flight or a canoe trip on the river (seasonal) to see the 80 km of gorge from water level.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a full day exploring the park, which is enough to do the main walks and coastal lookouts. If you’re keen on longer hikes (like the 8 km Loop) or want a more relaxed pace, plan for two days. The park is best visited between April and October, as summer temperatures can be extreme. Start early to avoid the heat and the crowds.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Kalbarri Town – Just 10 minutes from the park, this small coastal town has accommodation, supplies, and a lovely beach. It’s a natural base for exploring the national park.
- Murchison River – The river offers kayaking, fishing, and cruises, especially near the town. Combine a river trip with a gorge walk for a full day.
- Geraldton – About 1.5 hours south, Geraldton is a larger regional centre with museums (including the HMAS Sydney II memorial) and good dining. It’s a handy stop on the way to or from Perth.
- Hutt Lagoon (Pink Lake) – This striking pink salt lake near Port Gregory, about 30 minutes south of Kalbarri, is a surreal photo stop, especially from the air.
- Shark Bay World Heritage Area – About 3 hours north, Shark Bay offers Monkey Mia’s dolphins, the stromatolites at Hamelin Pool, and spectacular coastal scenery. It’s a logical extension for a longer road trip.
