Hutt Lagoon, a surreal pink lake on Western Australia's Coral Coast, is a bucket-list destination for photographers and nature lovers. Its vivid bubblegum-pink hue, caused by the algae Dunaliella salina and high salinity, shifts intensity with the time of day and season. Located just north of Port Gregory, the lagoon is best viewed from above, but the shoreline offers a close-up encounter with this natural phenomenon.
Highlights & What to See
- Pink Lake Views: The colour is most vibrant in the morning or late afternoon. For a panoramic perspective, head to the lookout on George Grey Drive or take a scenic flight from Kalbarri.
- Photography at Sunrise/Sunset: The contrast between the pink water, white salt crusts, and blue sky creates stunning compositions. Bring a polarising filter to reduce glare.
- Wildflowers in Spring: From August to October, the surrounding heathland erupts with colourful everlastings and other native blooms, adding another layer of beauty.
- Port Gregory: This tiny fishing village at the lagoon's edge has a jetty and calm waters for a dip. Grab fish and chips at the local caravan park.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for about 1–2 hours to drive the loop, stop at the lookout, and walk along the shore. If you're a keen photographer, allow extra time for the golden hours. Most visitors combine it with a day trip from Kalbarri (30 minutes north) or Geraldton (1.5 hours south).
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Kalbarri National Park: Famous for its dramatic river gorges and coastal cliffs, including Nature's Window and the Kalbarri Skywalk. A must-see on any Coral Coast itinerary.
- Port Gregory: A quiet seaside hamlet with a protected beach and a historic jetty. Good for a relaxed lunch or a short walk.
- Geraldton: The regional hub offers the HMAS Sydney II Memorial, excellent seafood, and the Museum of Geraldton. A logical base for exploring the area.
- The Pinnacles Desert (Nambung National Park): About 2.5 hours south, these ancient limestone formations rise from yellow sand dunes. Combine with a drive through Cervantes for lobster.
