K'gari (formerly Fraser Island) is the world's largest sand island, a UNESCO World Heritage site where ancient rainforests grow directly from sand dunes and crystalline freshwater lakes shimmer among towering eucalypts. This is a place of raw, elemental beauty—a four-wheel-drive playground where you'll traverse soft sand tracks, swim in gin-clear lakes, and spot dingoes roaming wild beaches. For international travellers, it's an unmissable slice of Queensland's wild side, best explored with a 4WD and a spirit of adventure.
Highlights & What to See
- Lake McKenzie – A perched lake with astonishingly clear, silica-white sand and water so pure it's almost distilled. Swim, float, and picnic on the blindingly white beach.
- Seventy-Five Mile Beach – The island's eastern beach doubles as a highway. Drive along the hard-packed sand past coloured sand cliffs, the rusty wreck of the Maheno, and the bubbling Champagne Pools.
- Central Station Rainforest – Walk a boardwalk through a lush rainforest that thrives on sand, with towering satinay and brush box trees. Keep an eye out for wallabies and goannas.
- Lake Wabby – A deep green lake backed by a massive sandblow. Hike across the dunes for a dramatic contrast of emerald water and endless sand.
- Indian Head – A rocky headland offering panoramic views of the coastline and a prime spot for spotting sharks, rays, and turtles in the surf below.
- Dingo Encounters – K'gari is home to purebred dingoes. Observe them from a distance; never feed or approach them.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most travellers spend 2–3 days on K'gari, which gives you enough time to hit the main highlights without feeling rushed. A classic itinerary: day one to explore the southern lakes and rainforest, day two to drive the beach north to Indian Head and the Champagne Pools, and day three for a more relaxed return or a hike to Lake Wabby. If you're short on time, a day trip from Hervey Bay or Rainbow Beach can still give you a taste, but you'll miss the magic of a sunset on the beach. The island is best visited between March and November to avoid the stinger season and extreme heat.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Hervey Bay – The main gateway to K'gari, with whale-watching tours (July–November) and a relaxed esplanade.
- Rainbow Beach – A colourful coastal town with a stunning coloured sand cliff and the starting point for many 4WD tours to the island.
- Great Sandy National Park – The mainland section offers cool rainforest walks and the peaceful Cooloola section, easily combined with a Fraser trip.
- Bundaberg – About two hours north, famous for its rum distillery and the turtle nesting at Mon Repos Beach.
- Tin Can Bay – A quiet fishing village where you can hand-feed wild Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins at sunrise.
