Hervey Bay is a laid-back coastal city on Queensland's Fraser Coast, best known as the gateway to the world's largest sand island, K'gari (Fraser Island). Its calm, protected waters make it a premier spot for whale watching, with humpback whales migrating through from July to November. The town itself offers a relaxed atmosphere, excellent seafood, and easy access to nearby natural wonders.
Highlights & What to See
- Whale Watching Cruises: Hervey Bay is Australia's whale-watching capital. From July to November, humpback whales pause here to rest and play, offering spectacular close encounters.
- K'gari (Fraser Island) Tours: Take a day trip or multi-day tour to explore the island's pristine lakes, ancient rainforests, and the famous Maheno shipwreck. Self-drive 4WD permits are available for adventurous travellers.
- Urangan Pier: Stroll along this historic 868-metre pier, a great spot for fishing, sunset views, and spotting marine life.
- Hervey Bay Botanic Gardens: A peaceful retreat with themed gardens, walking trails, and a café. Look out for the resident peacocks and flying foxes at dusk.
- Great Sandy Strait: Kayak or stand-up paddleboard through the calm mangroves and seagrass beds, home to dugongs, turtles, and dolphins.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most travellers spend 2 to 4 days in Hervey Bay. Two days allows for a whale-watching cruise and a day trip to K'gari. With three or four days, you can add a second Fraser Island excursion, explore the nearby town of Maryborough, or simply relax on the beaches and enjoy the local dining scene. The town is compact, so you can easily base yourself here and explore the surrounding region.
