Rainbow Beach delivers on its name with dramatic sand cliffs painted in 72 shades of ochre, rust, and gold. This laid-back coastal town on Queensland's Cooloola Coast is the launchpad for the legendary sand island of K'gari (Fraser Island) and offers its own wild beauty: sweeping beaches, coloured sands, and vast national park. With a relaxed village vibe and a backdrop of heathland and forest, it's a quieter alternative to Noosa and a must for self-drive explorers on the Great Beach Drive.
Highlights & What to See
- Coloured Sand Cliffs – The town's namesake: a 2-km stretch of towering sand bluffs streaked with red, orange, yellow, and white. Best viewed at sunrise or late afternoon from the beach or the Carlo Sand Blow lookout.
- Carlo Sand Blow – A surreal, moon-like sand dune that spills into the ocean. Climb to the top for 360-degree views of Double Island Point, K'gari, and the coastline. It's also a prime spot for sunset photography and sandboarding.
- K'gari (Fraser Island) 4WD Adventures – Rainbow Beach is the southern gateway to the world's largest sand island. Join a tag-along tour or self-drive (with a 4WD permit) to explore Lake McKenzie, the Maheno Shipwreck, and Eli Creek.
- Double Island Point – A headland with a historic lighthouse and excellent hiking. The walk offers panoramic views and, in season, you might spot humpback whales migrating.
- Great Sandy National Park – Encompassing the Cooloola Recreation Area, this park features freshwater lakes (like Lake Poona), lush rainforest walks, and the Cooloola Great Walk – a multi-day trek through diverse ecosystems.
- Rainbow Beach Horse Rides – A unique way to explore the beach and bush, with rides along the shoreline at low tide.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most travellers base themselves here for 2–3 nights. One full day is enough to see the coloured sands, Carlo Sand Blow, and do a walk at Double Island Point. Add at least one more day for a K'gari 4WD day trip or a self-drive exploration of the Cooloola section of Great Sandy National Park. If you're on a self-drive itinerary, Rainbow Beach makes a perfect overnight stop between Noosa and Hervey Bay, or as a starting point for the Great Beach Drive north to K'gari.
