Iluka Nature Reserve is a pocket of lush coastal rainforest on the far north coast of New South Wales, where the Clarence River meets the sea. This World Heritage-listed reserve is a sanctuary for ancient palms and towering figs, offering a serene escape into one of Australia’s most biodiverse pockets. It’s a place for quiet walks, birdwatching, and connecting with a landscape that feels unchanged for millennia.
Highlights & What to See
- Iluka Rainforest Walk – A 2.6 km loop through towering Bangalow palms and strangler figs, with a boardwalk section that makes it accessible for most fitness levels. Listen for the whip-crack call of the eastern whipbird.
- Iluka Bluff Lookout – A short walk leads to sweeping views over the Clarence River mouth and the Pacific Ocean. It’s a prime spot for whale watching during migration season (June–November).
- Birdwatching paradise – The reserve is home to the rare little tern and the white-bellied sea eagle. Bring binoculars for canopy-level sightings.
- Beach access – The adjacent Iluka Beach is a quiet, unpatrolled stretch perfect for a post-walk swim or a picnic with sea views.
- Bundjalung National Park connection – The reserve adjoins this larger national park, offering extended walking trails and diverse coastal heath ecosystems.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is ideal to explore the main rainforest loop, take in the lookout, and relax on the beach. If you’re a keen birder or want to combine the walk with the nearby Bundjalung National Park trails, allocate a full day. The reserve is easily done as a morning or afternoon trip from Yamba or Grafton.
