Wedged between the soaring Central Mountain Range and the turquoise Pacific, Hualien is Taiwan's wild, untamed east coast heart. This city is the gateway to Taroko Gorge's marble-walled chasms, but it's also a place where Indigenous cultures, night markets, and surf breaks converge. The air smells of grilled seafood and mountain pine, and the rhythm is slower, more elemental.
Highlights & What to See
- Taroko Gorge – A jaw-dropping marble canyon carved by the Liwu River. Walk the Shakadang Trail for turquoise pools, or the Zhuilu Old Trail for vertiginous cliffside views.
- Qixingtan Beach – A crescent of dark sand and pebbles perfect for a sunrise stroll or watching surfers ride the Pacific swells.
- Dongdamen Night Market – The city's sprawling food bazaar, where you can feast on grilled squid, mochi, and the local specialty: coffin bread (a hollowed-out toast filled with curry or chowder).
- Liyu Lake – A serene, carp-shaped lake at the foot of Liyu Mountain. Rent a paddleboat or cycle the perimeter trail.
- Hualien Cultural & Creative Industries Park – A former sake brewery turned arts hub, with galleries, indie shops, and craft-beer tasting rooms.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors base themselves in Hualien for 2–3 days. Spend the first day exploring Taroko Gorge (a half-day is enough for a highlights tour, but full-day hikers will want more). Dedicate the second day to the coast: morning at Qixingtan, afternoon at Liyu Lake, and evening at Dongdamen Night Market. If you have a third day, consider a whale-watching tour (seasonal) or a deeper dive into Indigenous culture at the Amis Folk Center.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Yilan – A lush, hot-spring-dotted county south of Taipei, with the stunning Taipingshan National Forest Recreation Area and the dramatic Suhua Highway coastal drive.
- Taroko Gorge – The gorge itself is an obvious day-trip, but consider staying overnight in the park's only hotel for a magical, crowd-free experience.
- Fuli – A laid-back township south of Hualien, famous for its golden rice terraces and the 1930s-era Fuli Station.
- East Rift Valley – A scenic 158-km valley of hot springs, tea plantations, and cycling paths between Hualien and Taitung. Highlights include Ruisui Hot Springs and Chishang's rice fields.
- Taitung – A bohemian city further south, with Indigenous villages, the surreal Sanxiantai arch bridge, and the world-class Taitung Forest Park.
