Dragon's Back, Hong Kong Southern District
Dragon's Back is Hong Kong's most celebrated urban hike, a serpentine ridge on Hong Kong Island that delivers jaw-dropping coastal views with minimal effort. This five-mile trail – part of the Hong Kong Trail – winds through lush secondary forest and open grassland, culminating in panoramas of Shek O beach, the South China Sea, and the distant islands. It's a favourite among locals and visitors alike for its accessibility, spectacular scenery, and the chance to escape the city's relentless pace without travelling far.
Highlights & What to See
- Shek O Peak Viewpoint – The trail's highest point (284 m) offers a 360° vista of turquoise bays, rugged coastline, and the high-rises of Chai Wan fading into the distance.
- Shek O Beach – After the descent, cool off at this golden-sand beach with gentle surf, alfresco seafood restaurants, and a laid-back village vibe.
- Big Wave Bay – A short detour from the trail leads to this surfers' haven, where you can watch board riders tackle the swells or grab a beer at the beachfront café.
- Dragon's Back Ridge – The namesake spine of the trail, where the path follows a narrow, undulating crest with sheer drops on either side – the most exhilarating stretch.
- To Tei Wan Village – A tiny, traditional Hakka settlement en route, offering a glimpse of rural Hong Kong life with its weathered stone houses and vegetable plots.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most hikers complete the full Dragon's Back–Shek O loop in 3–4 hours, including time for photos and a dip at the beach. Start early morning to beat the heat and crowds; the trail is well-shaded in sections but exposed on the ridge. If you're short on time, a 2-hour out-and-back to Shek O Peak viewpoint is still rewarding. Combine with a lazy lunch at Shek O and you've got a perfect half-day escape from Central.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Stanley – A historic fishing village with a lively waterfront promenade, market stalls, and the colonial-era Murray House – just a 20-minute bus ride from Shek O.
- Repulse Bay – Hong Kong's classic crescent beach, flanked by luxury hotels and the Tin Hau Temple, ideal for a post-hike cocktail or a sunset stroll.
- Tai Long Wan (Sai Kung) – For serious hikers, the dramatic coastal trail from Sai Kung to Tai Long Wan offers wilder beaches and a more remote feel, a half-day trip from Dragon's Back.
- Ocean Park – A world-class marine theme park perched on the southern coast, easily combined with a morning hike for a day of adventure.
- Hong Kong Trail (Stage 8) – Dragon's Back forms Stage 8 of the 50-km Hong Kong Trail; keen walkers can continue to the adjoining sections for a longer trek through the country parks.
