Sai Kung East Country Park
Sai Kung East Country Park is a rugged coastal wilderness on Hong Kong's eastern flank, where emerald hills plunge into azure sea. This is hiking paradise: dramatic sea cliffs, hidden beaches, and the UNESCO Global Geopark's volcanic rock formations. Expect few crowds and a real sense of escape — just you, the wind, and the South China Sea.
Highlights & What to See
- Sharp Island (Kiu Tau): A tombolo island with a natural sandbar that appears at low tide, connecting to the mainland. Snorkel in clear waters or hike its mini volcano trail.
- Tai Long Wan (Big Wave Bay): Four consecutive beaches — Sai Wan, Ham Tin, Tai Wan, and Tung Wan — strung together by a coastal trail. Perfect for swimming, camping, or just lazing on golden sand.
- High Island Geo Trail: Walk the MacLehose Trail Section 1 across the High Island Reservoir, passing hexagonal volcanic columns and sea caves. It's a geologist's dream.
- Sheung Luk Stream: One of Hong Kong's best wild swimming spots — a series of tiered pools and waterfalls hidden in a lush valley. Access via a moderate hike from Pak Tam Au.
- Pak Tam Chung Nature Trail: A gentle, family-friendly walk through secondary forest, with interpretive signs about local flora and fauna. Great for birdwatching.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors base themselves in Sai Kung town and day-hike into the park. For a proper taste, dedicate at least a full day — take an early bus to Pak Tam Au, hike the MacLehose Trail to the coast, and return via a kaito (ferry) from Wong Shek Pier. If you want to camp overnight at Tai Long Wan, two days allows for a slower pace, with time for swimming and sunset drinks at a beachside stall.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Sai Kung Town: The seafood capital of Hong Kong — feast on fresh catch at waterfront restaurants, then browse the weekend market for local crafts.
- Kowloon Peak (Fei Ngo Shan): A steep hike with panoramic views over Kowloon and Victoria Harbour. Best at sunrise.
- Clear Water Bay Country Park: More coastal hiking and a quieter alternative to Sai Kung East, with the striking Clear Water Bay Peninsula.
- Ma On Shan Country Park: Rugged terrain with a historic mining site and the scenic Ma On Shan Country Trail.
- Tai Po Kau Nature Reserve: A tranquil forest with walking trails and a visitor centre; excellent for spotting butterflies and birds.
