Tai O, a stilt-house fishing village on Lantau Island’s western coast, feels a world away from Hong Kong’s skyscrapers. Known as the ‘Venice of Hong Kong’, its labyrinth of canals, rickety wooden walkways and salt-stained huts offers a rare glimpse into the territory’s pre-colonial fishing culture. The air smells of shrimp paste and sea salt, and the only traffic is the putter of sampans ferrying locals between the two sides of the village.
Highlights & What to See
- Stilt Houses & Tai O Creek – Wander the elevated boardwalks above the tidal creek, where ramshackle homes on wooden stilts line the water. Join a short sampan ride to see them from the water and, with luck, spot pink dolphins in the surrounding waters.
- Tai O Market & Shrimp Paste – The narrow lanes of the market are crammed with stalls selling dried seafood, local snacks and the famous Tai O shrimp paste. Try a bowl of sticky rice with preserved egg and pork, or a freshly grilled squid.
- Kwan Tai Temple – This 300-year-old temple, dedicated to the Chinese god of war, sits at the village entrance. Its ornate roof ridges and dark interior are a quiet counterpoint to the market bustle.
- Tai O Heritage Hotel – A beautifully restored colonial police station on a hill above the village, now a boutique hotel with a rooftop café. Pop in for a drink and sweeping views over the South China Sea.
- Sunset at the Tai O Lookout – Follow the footpath behind the hotel to a lookout point that commands a panorama of the village, the Pearl River estuary and the distant mountains of mainland China. Best visited around 5pm for golden light.
Suggested Time to Spend
Tai O rewards a relaxed half-day. Arrive mid-morning, spend an hour exploring the market and temples, then take a sampan ride (20 minutes) before lunch at one of the waterfront restaurants. After lunch, walk up to the Heritage Hotel and lookout for sunset, then catch the bus back to Tung Chung. If you want to linger, consider an overnight stay at the Heritage Hotel or a local guesthouse to experience the village after the day-trippers leave.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Ngong Ping 360 & Tian Tan Buddha – A 20-minute bus ride from Tai O takes you to the Ngong Ping cable car terminus. Ride up to the Big Buddha, Po Lin Monastery and the Wisdom Path for a full day of Lantau exploration.
- Lantau Trail (Section 7) – For walkers, the Lantau Trail links Tai O to the Ngong Ping plateau via a beautiful ridgeline hike (about 3 hours). Great for combining nature and culture.
- Cheung Chau Island – A ferry ride from the Mui Wo ferry pier (accessible from Tai O by bus) leads to Cheung Chau, a car-free island with a lively waterfront, bun-sculpture displays and hiking trails.
- Hong Kong Disneyland – If you have kids (or a soft spot for theme parks), Disneyland is a 30-minute taxi ride from Tai O via the North Lantau Highway.
