Cheung Chau is a dumbbell-shaped island off the coast of Hong Kong’s New Territories, offering a refreshing escape from the city’s skyscrapers. Renowned for its seafood, sandy beaches, and vibrant fishing village atmosphere, it’s a place where traditional Chinese culture meets laid-back island life. The island is car-free, so exploring by foot or bicycle is the way to go, with narrow lanes lined with temples, dried-seafood shops, and local eateries.
Highlights & What to See
- Pak Tai Temple: A historic Taoist temple dedicated to the god of the sea, featuring intricate roof carvings and a grand altar. It’s the focal point of the annual Cheung Chau Bun Festival.
- Tung Wan Beach: The main sandy beach, perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and windsurfing. The calm waters and lifeguard patrol make it family-friendly.
- Mini Great Wall: A scenic coastal walkway with panoramic views of the South China Sea, passing rock formations like the “Human Head Rock” and “Vase Rock.”
- Cheung Chau Bun Festival (late April/early May): A unique cultural event featuring parade floats, lion dances, and the famous “bun-snatching” competition on a 14-metre-high bamboo tower.
- Fishing Village and Typhoon Shelter: Wander along the waterfront to see colourful fishing junks and sampans, and watch local fishermen mend nets.
Suggested Time to Spend
Cheung Chau can be comfortably explored in a full day, starting with a morning ferry from Central. Spend the morning hiking the Mini Great Wall and visiting Pak Tai Temple, then enjoy a seafood lunch at one of the harbourfront restaurants. The afternoon is ideal for beach time or cycling around the island. If you want to experience the Bun Festival, plan for an overnight stay to catch the evening parade and bun-snatching.
