Beyond the skyscrapers of Kowloon and Hong Kong Island, the New Territories unfurl a greener, wilder side of Hong Kong — a landscape of misty mountain ranges, ancient walled villages, and serene country parks. This vast region, which makes up nearly 86% of Hong Kong's land area, offers travellers a glimpse into traditional rural life with its temples, fish rafts, and hiking trails that plunge into subtropical forests. Whether you're cycling along the coast of Sai Kung or exploring the bustling markets of Sha Tin, the New Territories feel refreshingly untamed yet delightfully accessible.
Highlights & What to See
- Ping Shan Heritage Trail – A well-signposted walk through centuries-old ancestral halls, temples, and watchtowers in the Tang clan villages of Hang Mei Tsuen and Sheung Cheung Wai.
- Sai Kung Peninsula – A paradise for hikers and seafood lovers, with the MacLehose Trail, volcanic rock formations at High Island Geo Area, and floating fish restaurants at Sai Kung Town pier.
- Tai Mo Shan – Hong Kong's highest peak (957 m), often cloaked in mist, offering challenging hikes and panoramic views over the entire territory.
- Kam Tin Walled Village – A fortified Hakka village with narrow lanes, old cannons, and the distinctive Kat Hing Wai enclosure, still home to the Tang clan.
- Hong Kong Wetland Park – A 60-hectare reserve in Tin Shui Wai with boardwalks, bird hides, and a visitor centre showcasing the region's mangrove and marsh ecosystems.
- Cheung Chau Island – A short ferry ride from Central, this dumbbell-shaped island offers a laid-back fishing-village vibe, a mini Great Wall hike, and the famous bun-snatching festival in spring.
Suggested Time to Spend
To really explore the New Territories, plan at least two to three days. Dedicate one day to the Sai Kung peninsula (combine a morning hike with a seafood lunch) and another to the heritage trail and walled villages in the northwest. A third day could be used for Tai Mo Shan or a side trip to Cheung Chau. If you're short on time, a full-day minibus tour that hits Ping Shan, Kam Tin, and a quick stop at the Wetland Park can give a solid taste.
