Ping Shan, a historic area in the New Territories of Hong Kong, offers a rare glimpse into the region's ancient past. Home to the Tang clan—one of the Five Great Clans of Hong Kong—Ping Shan is a treasure trove of traditional Chinese architecture, ancestral halls, and heritage trails. Here, you can wander through centuries-old villages and experience a side of Hong Kong far removed from the skyscrapers of Kowloon.
Highlights & What to See
- Ping Shan Heritage Trail – A self-guided walking trail that links several historic landmarks, including the Tsui Sing Lau Pagoda (Hong Kong's only surviving ancient pagoda), the Kun Ting Study Hall, and the Tang Ancestral Hall.
- Tang Ancestral Hall – A magnificent example of traditional Qing dynasty architecture, this hall is still used by the Tang clan for ceremonies and gatherings.
- Tsui Sing Lau Pagoda – Built in the 14th century, this hexagonal pagoda is a symbol of scholarly success and offers a photogenic centrepiece for the trail.
- Kun Ting Study Hall – A beautifully preserved study hall that once prepared young Tang men for imperial examinations, now a museum showcasing calligraphy and clan history.
- Yeung Hau Temple – A small but atmospheric Taoist temple dedicated to the god Hau Wong, with intricate roof carvings and incense-filled interiors.
- Ping Shan Community – The living villages around the trail, such as Hang Tau Tsuen and Hang Mei Tsuen, where you can see traditional village houses and watch daily life unfold.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is ample to explore the Ping Shan Heritage Trail at a leisurely pace. Start in the morning to avoid the midday heat, and allow about 2–3 hours for the walk itself, plus extra time to linger in the temples and halls. Combine with a dim sum lunch in nearby Yuen Long for a full cultural outing.
