Hong Kong Islands: Sok Kwu Wan
On the southern coast of Lamma Island, Sok Kwu Wan is a sleepy fishing village that feels a world away from the skyscrapers of Hong Kong Island. Arriving by ferry, you're greeted by a boardwalk lined with seafood restaurants, their tanks bubbling with live fish and crabs. The air smells of salt and sizzling garlic, and the only sounds are the clink of chopsticks and the gentle lapping of waves. This is Hong Kong at its most laid-back — a place to eat fresh seafood, wander past traditional stilt houses, and explore coastal hiking trails with knockout views.
Highlights & What to See
- Seafood feast on the waterfront: The open-air restaurants along the main street are the main draw. Pick a tank, choose your fish, and it's grilled or steamed to order. Try the mantis shrimp or the local favourite, garlic steamed clams.
- Lamma Island Family Walk: A scenic 60-minute trail connects Sok Kwu Wan to Yung Shue Wan on the other side of the island. It's an easy walk through bamboo groves and past old fishing villages, ending at a lively main street.
- Tin Hau Temple: A small, atmospheric temple dedicated to the goddess of the sea, located at the northern end of the village. Look for the intricate boat models hanging from the ceiling — offerings from grateful fishermen.
- Kamikaze Cave: A short walk south leads to a former Japanese military bunker from WWII, now a dark, eerie cave that adventurous hikers can explore by torchlight.
- Stilt houses and fishing boats: Spend time wandering the back alleys where old wooden houses perch over the water, and watch local fishermen mend their nets — a glimpse into a vanishing way of life.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors come for a half-day trip: arrive by ferry from Central Pier 4 (about 30 minutes), enjoy a leisurely seafood lunch, then walk the Family Walk to Yung Shue Wan and catch the ferry back from there. If you want to include the Kamikaze Cave and a longer coastal hike, allow 5–6 hours. For a truly relaxed afternoon, just stay put in Sok Kwu Wan — order a cold beer, watch the ferries come and go, and let the afternoon drift by.
