Shek O Country Park, on the southeastern coast of Hong Kong Island, offers a blissful escape from the city's relentless pace. This rugged peninsula combines dramatic coastal walks, quiet beaches, and a laid-back village atmosphere that feels a world away from Central's skyscrapers. It's a favourite among locals for weekend hikes and barbecues, and for international travellers it provides a genuine taste of Hong Kong's wilder side – think windswept headlands, turquoise coves, and the scent of salt and pine.
Highlights & What to See
- Dragon's Back Hike – arguably Hong Kong's most famous trail, this undulating ridge offers panoramic views of the South China Sea, Shek O Beach, and the distant islands. It's a relatively easy 8.5 km walk that rewards with constant photo-worthy vistas.
- Shek O Beach – a broad, golden-sand beach with gentle waves, perfect for swimming, sunbathing, or a cold beer at one of the beachfront cafés. On weekdays you'll often have it nearly to yourself.
- Shek O Village – a charming, low-rise enclave of seafood restaurants, noodle shops, and traditional temples. The Tin Hau Temple, dedicated to the goddess of the sea, is a quiet cultural stop.
- Big Wave Bay – a smaller, more rugged beach at the northern end of the park, known for its surf breaks and the prehistoric rock carvings (a declared monument) found at its eastern end.
- Coastal Walk from Shek O to Big Wave Bay – a scenic 45-minute trail hugging the cliffs, with views of rocky shores and the occasional fishing junk bobbing offshore.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors allocate a half-day to Shek O Country Park, which is enough to tackle the Dragon's Back hike (allow 2–3 hours) and then unwind at Shek O Beach with a seafood lunch. If you're keen to explore the village and both beaches, or simply want to linger on the sand, a full day is ideal. Start early to avoid the midday heat and crowds on weekends; the hike is best done in the morning when the light is soft and the air is cool.
