Pok Fu Lam Country Park
Pok Fu Lam Country Park, a green sanctuary on the western side of Hong Kong Island, offers a refreshing escape from the city's relentless pace. Named after the historic Pok Fu Lam village, the park is a tangle of lush subtropical forest, trickling streams, and shaded trails. It's a favorite among locals for morning hikes and weekend picnics, and its proximity to the urban core makes it an easy addition to any Hong Kong itinerary.
Highlights & What to See
- Pok Fu Lam Reservoir: Built in the 19th century, this serene body of water is surrounded by a gentle walking trail. The arched stone bridge and the reflection of the wooded hills create a classic, contemplative scene.
- Hong Kong Trail (Section 1): The park is the starting point of the 50-km Hong Kong Trail. The first section (The Peak to Pok Fu Lam Reservoir) is a moderate, family-friendly walk through dense forest with glimpses of the South China Sea.
- Pinewood Battery: A WWII-era military relic perched on a hilltop, offering panoramic views over the western harbour and Lamma Island. The short, steep climb is rewarded with a quiet, historic ruin.
- Wildlife Spotting: Keep an eye out for macaques, wild boar, and a dazzling array of birds, including the crested serpent eagle and the red-whiskered bulbul. Early morning visits are best.
- Pok Fu Lam Village: Just outside the park boundary, this quaint village retains a handful of traditional Hakka houses and a small temple. Stop for a cold sugarcane juice at one of the local stalls.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is ample to explore the park's main trails and the reservoir. Arrive early (around 8am) to beat the heat and the crowds. A typical loop: start from the Pok Fu Lam Reservoir Road entrance, walk the reservoir circuit, then tackle the Pinewood Battery trail. Afterward, head to the nearby The Peak for lunch with a view, or descend to Kennedy Town for a craft beer. If you're a keen hiker, combine with Section 2 of the Hong Kong Trail for a full day on the trail.
