Kennedy Town, wedged between Victoria Harbour and Mount Davis on northwestern Hong Kong Island, is a neighbourhood in transition. Once a gritty working-class enclave, it has blossomed into a hipster haven of craft breweries, waterfront promenades and century-old temples, all framed by the jagged skyline of the city. The area rewards those who wander its sloping streets with a palpable sense of local life that feels a world away from the neon crush of Central.
Highlights & What to See
- Belcher Bay Promenade – This slender, breezy boardwalk hugs the harbour and offers knockout sunset views across to Green Island and the Lamma Channel. Locals jog, fish and gossip here; join them for a lazy evening stroll.
- Kennedy Town Swimming Shed – A photogenic, rust-tinged concrete platform jutting into the sea where swimmers dive into the harbour. It’s a beloved relic of old Hong Kong and a fantastic spot for a salty dip at dawn.
- Lung Fu Shan Morning Trail – A shaded, stepped path that climbs from the edge of the neighbourhood into the wooded slopes of Lung Fu Shan Country Park. The short hike rewards with sweeping views of the harbour and the distant peak of Victoria Peak.
- Kavalan Distillery – The only whisky distillery in Hong Kong, housed in a former industrial building. Book a tasting to sample their single malts and learn about the craft in this unlikely urban setting.
- Tin Hau Temple – Tucked away on a side street, this small, incense-heavy temple dedicated to the goddess of the sea dates back to the late 19th century and offers a quiet counterpoint to the area’s modern bars.
Suggested Time to Spend
Kennedy Town works best as a half-day excursion, ideally starting in the late afternoon. Spend an hour or two exploring the backstreets and the temple, then walk the Belcher Bay Promenade as the light softens. If you’re keen on a hike, arrive earlier and tackle the Lung Fu Shan trail first. Finish with dinner and a craft beer at one of the neighbourhood’s buzzing gastropubs. Devote a full day only if you plan to combine it with a longer hike on Mount Davis or a distillery visit.
