High Country Rail Trail

Pedalling through the crisp mountain air of north-east Victoria, the High Country Rail Trail is a 100-kilometre multi-use path that follows the historic railway corridor from Wodonga to Shelley. This former rail line, once used to haul timber and supplies into the remote high country, now offers cyclists and walkers a gentle gradient through changing landscapes: river flats, dense forests, and open farmland with long views to the snow-capped peaks. The trail is well-surfaced with crushed gravel, making it accessible for hybrid bikes and families, and dotted with restored station buildings, interpretive signs, and picnic spots that tell the story of the region's pioneering past.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allow at least two days to ride the full trail at a relaxed pace, overnighting in Yackandandah or Tallangatta. Most riders split it as: Day 1 – Wodonga to Yackandandah (20 km, 2–3 hours) with time to explore the town; Day 2 – Yackandandah to Shelley (80 km, 5–6 hours of riding). If you only have a day, the best half-day ride is from Wodonga to Yackandandah and back (40 km total), which takes in the most varied scenery and the best cafe stop. Walkers can tackle shorter sections – the 12 km from Tallangatta to Eskdale is a lovely afternoon stroll.
