Straddling the Murray River on the Victorian side of the border, Wodonga is a relaxed regional centre that blends a lively café culture with easy access to glorious riverine and national-park landscapes. It’s the quieter half of the Albury–Wodonga twin cities, offering a more laid-back pace while still packing in excellent galleries, farmers markets and walking trails. For self-drive travellers, it’s a perfect base to explore the Murray River’s heritage, the wineries of Rutherglen and the alpine wilderness of the High Country.
Highlights & What to See
- Murray River & Gateway Island – Stroll or cycle across the historic Murray River Bridge to Gateway Island, a peaceful park with wetlands, boardwalks and bird hides. The river itself is a magnet for kayaking, fishing and lazy afternoon picnics.
- Wodonga Farmers Market – Held on the first Saturday of each month, this is a feast of local produce: artisan cheeses, organic veggies, honey, preserves and hot food stalls. Grab a coffee and soak up the community vibe.
- Hyphen – Wodonga Library Gallery – A sleek modern cultural hub that hosts rotating art exhibitions, local history displays and a great little café. The building itself is a standout piece of architecture.
- Wodonga Rail Trail – A 10-km sealed path following the old railway line, perfect for a family bike ride or a gentle walk. It links to the larger Murray to Mountains Rail Trail, which stretches all the way to Bright.
- Bonegilla Migrant Experience – Just across the border in NSW, this heritage site tells the powerful story of post-war migrants who passed through the Bonegilla Migrant Reception Centre. It’s a moving and important slice of Australian history.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow a full day to explore Wodonga’s core sights and relax by the river. If you’re using it as a base for the surrounding region, two to three days gives you time to cycle the Rail Trail, visit Bonegilla, and take a day trip to Rutherglen’s wineries or the alpine villages of Bright and Beechworth. The town is compact enough that you can see the main attractions in a morning, but the real joy is in slowing down and soaking up the Murray River lifestyle.
