Hervey Bay is a laid-back coastal city on Queensland's Fraser Coast, best known as the gateway to the world's largest sand island, K'gari (Fraser Island). Its calm, protected waters make it a premier spot for whale watching, with humpback whales migrating through from July to November. The town itself offers a relaxed atmosphere, excellent seafood, and easy access to nearby natural wonders.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most travellers spend 2 to 4 days in Hervey Bay. Two days allows for a whale-watching cruise and a day trip to K'gari. With three or four days, you can add a second Fraser Island excursion, explore the nearby town of Maryborough, or simply relax on the beaches and enjoy the local dining scene. The town is compact, so you can easily base yourself here and explore the surrounding region.
