Hawkes Bay Trails

Pedal through a landscape of rolling vineyards, art deco architecture and sun-drenched coastlines on the Hawkes Bay Trails, a 200-kilometre network of cycle paths that is one of New Zealand's Great Rides. This is a trip that marries outdoor adventure with gourmet indulgence: you'll freewheel past cellar doors, farmers' markets and historic towns, with the Pacific Ocean as a constant blue companion. The trails are well surfaced and mostly flat, making them accessible to casual cyclists and families while still offering enough variety to satisfy seasoned riders.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most riders tackle the Hawkes Bay Trails over two to three days, allowing time to explore the towns, sample the wine and take detours to beaches and reserves. The full loop from Napier to Hastings and back via the coast is around 80 kilometres, easily split into two relaxed days. If you're short on time, the 30-kilometre coastal section from Napier to Cape Kidnappers makes a superb half-day ride, leaving the afternoon for a winery visit or a stroll through Napier's art deco streets.
