Cape Kidnappers

Perched on the wild Hawke’s Bay coast, Cape Kidnappers is a dramatic headland that combines epic birdlife, rugged geology, and sweeping ocean views. Named after a 1769 encounter with Māori, this remote cape is now a nature reserve and the site of the world’s largest mainland gannet colony. The journey here is as memorable as the destination – a four-wheel-drive beach ride or a scenic walk along towering cliffs leads you to thousands of nesting gannets, their cries filling the air. It’s a place where raw nature takes centre stage.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allocate at least half a day for a round trip from Napier or Hastings. If you’re walking, plan 4–5 hours for the return hike plus time at the colony. For a 4WD tour, 2–3 hours is enough. Combine with a morning at the gannets and an afternoon exploring the nearby wineries for a full day out.
