Perched on the wild Hawke’s Bay coast, Cape Kidnappers is a dramatic headland that combines epic birdlife, rugged geology, and sweeping ocean views. Named after a 1769 encounter with Māori, this remote cape is now a nature reserve and the site of the world’s largest mainland gannet colony. The journey here is as memorable as the destination – a four-wheel-drive beach ride or a scenic walk along towering cliffs leads you to thousands of nesting gannets, their cries filling the air. It’s a place where raw nature takes centre stage.
Highlights & What to See
- Gannet Colony: From November to February, over 20,000 Australasian gannets nest on the clifftops. Get within metres of these elegant seabirds – the sight (and smell) is unforgettable.
- Cape Kidnappers Walk: This 8.5 km (one-way) coastal track hugs the cliffs, passing ancient limestone formations and offering whale-spotting opportunities. Check tide times – it’s only passable at low tide.
- Beach Drive: Join a 4WD tour that drives along the beach to the colony – a thrilling ride with the Tasman Sea on one side and towering cliffs on the other.
- Te Awanga & Clifton: The gateway villages, Clifton and Te Awanga, have laid-back cafes and vineyards. Stop for a Hawke’s Bay wine tasting after your adventure.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allocate at least half a day for a round trip from Napier or Hastings. If you’re walking, plan 4–5 hours for the return hike plus time at the colony. For a 4WD tour, 2–3 hours is enough. Combine with a morning at the gannets and an afternoon exploring the nearby wineries for a full day out.
