Hann Tableland National Park
Rising abruptly from the Atherton Tableland, Hann Tableland National Park is a wild, rugged escarpment cloaked in dry rainforest and open eucalypt woodland. This lesser-known gem offers sweeping views across the Mareeba valley and a genuine sense of isolation, far from the tourist crowds. It’s a place for those who want to hike through ancient landscapes, spot wildlife, and soak up the raw beauty of Far North Queensland.
Highlights & What to See
- Hann Tableland Summit Walk – a challenging 6 km return hike that rewards with panoramic views over the tableland and out to the Great Dividing Range. The trail winds through vine thickets and granite outcrops, with birdlife aplenty.
- Picnic at the Lookout – the day-use area near the park entrance has a small grassy area and a lookout over the surrounding farmland and forest. Perfect for a quiet lunch with a view.
- Birdwatching – keep an eye out for rainbow lorikeets, crimson rosellas, and the elusive buff-breasted paradise-kingfisher. The park is a haven for birders.
- Wildlife spotting – wallabies, agile wallabies, and even the occasional echidna can be seen along the trails. Dawn and dusk are best.
- Exploring the dry rainforest – the park protects a rare patch of semi-deciduous vine forest, with towering fig trees and strangler figs. The contrast with the drier woodlands is striking.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors come for a half-day trip – allow 3–4 hours to complete the summit walk and enjoy a picnic. If you’re keen on birdwatching or photography, plan for a full morning or late afternoon. The park is best visited from April to October when the weather is cooler and drier; summer walks can be hot and humid, with afternoon storms common.
