Atherton

Perched on the fertile Atherton Tablelands, Atherton is the region's unofficial capital—a relaxed country town that serves as a perfect base for exploring waterfalls, crater lakes, and ancient rainforest. The air is noticeably cooler than coastal Cairns, and the surrounding farmland produces everything from coffee to mangoes. It's a place where you can dawdle over a long lunch at a café, then be plunging into a swimming hole beneath a curtain of water within minutes.

If you're short on time, you can hit the highlights in a long day trip from Cairns (about 90 minutes each way), but you'll miss the early-morning calm on the lakes and the chance to dine at the region's excellent farm-to-table restaurants. For a relaxed pace, base yourself in Atherton or Yungaburra for two nights.
