Font Roja Natural Park is a hiker's paradise tucked in the mountains of Alicante province, offering a slice of Mediterranean wilderness that feels a world away from the coast. This protected area, centred on the dramatic Menejador peak, is a tapestry of limestone crags, shady holm oak groves, and wildflower-strewn meadows. A self-drive here rewards you with stunning views over the Vinalopó Valley and the chance to explore a landscape that has inspired poets and pilgrims for centuries.
Highlights & What to See
- Summit of Menejador: The highest point in the park (1356 m) delivers panoramic views stretching to the Mediterranean on clear days. The well-marked trail from the Santuari de la Font Roja is a must-do.
- Cova de les Finestres: A natural cave with 'windows' in the rock that frame breathtaking vistas – a short detour from the main trail.
- Santuari de la Font Roja: A 17th-century sanctuary nestled in the forest, with a small bar and picnic area. The spring here gives the park its name ('Red Fountain').
- Barranc de l'Infern (Gorge of Hell): A dramatic ravine carved by water, with sheer cliffs and a cool, shaded path perfect for a summer walk.
- Flora and fauna: Look for Bonelli's eagles, wild boar, and the endemic Font Roja violet. The park is a botanist's delight in spring.
Suggested Time to Spend
Dedicate at least half a day to properly experience Font Roja. A morning hike up Menejador (allow 3–4 hours return from the sanctuary) leaves the afternoon for exploring the gorge and a leisurely picnic. If you're a keen walker, you could easily spend a full day linking trails, but most visitors find 4–5 hours sufficient for the highlights. Combine with a visit to Alcoy (just 6 km away) for lunch or a coffee.
