Deep in the Nambucca Valley, Dunggir National Park is a pocket of lush subtropical rainforest that feels a world away from the coast. This small but mighty park is a sanctuary for endangered species like the koala and the powerful owl, and its walking trails lead you through towering flooded gums and ancient palms. It's a place for quiet immersion in nature — expect birdsong, dappled light, and the scent of damp earth.
Highlights & What to See
- Lyons Lookout Walk – A short, steep climb rewards you with sweeping views over the Nambucca Valley and out to the coast. Best in the early morning when the light is soft.
- Rainforest Loop Walk – An easy 1.5 km circuit through cool, shady rainforest. Look for strangler figs, king ferns, and the occasional brush turkey scratching in the leaf litter.
- Koala spotting – Dunggir is one of the few places in NSW where you can see koalas in the wild. Dawn and dusk are your best bets, especially along the park's fire trails.
- Picnic areas – Simple, peaceful spots with tables and barbecues, perfect for a lunch break surrounded by forest.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is enough to explore the main walking tracks and enjoy a picnic. If you're keen on koala-spotting or birdwatching, allow a full day — early mornings and late afternoons are the most rewarding. The park is small, so you can easily combine it with other stops in the Nambucca Valley.
