The Darling River Run is an epic outback road trip that traces the winding course of Australia’s longest river system through remote New South Wales. This iconic route takes you from the pastoral town of Walgett to the historic river port of Wentworth, passing through red-earth landscapes, sleepy hamlets, and river red gum forests. It’s a journey into the heart of the Aussie bush, where the pace slows to the rhythm of the river and the vast, star-filled skies demand a pause.
Highlights & What to See
- Bourke – Step back in time at the historic wharf and the Back O’ Bourke exhibition, which tells the story of the river’s role in opening up the interior.
- Louth – Visit the iconic Louth Pub, a classic outback watering hole, and the nearby racecourse that hosts the legendary Louth Races.
- Tilpa – A tiny riverside settlement famous for its pub covered in thousands of dollar-bill signatures and the Tilpa Ferry, a cable-drawn punt.
- Wilcannia – Explore the grand 19th-century buildings along the river, remnants of the paddle-steamer era, and learn about the local Barkindji culture.
- Menindee Lakes – A series of shallow, bird-filled lakes that are a haven for waterbirds and a striking contrast to the surrounding arid plains.
- Kinchega National Park – Camp among ancient red gums and spot kangaroos, emus, and eagles along the riverbanks.
- Wentworth – Where the Darling meets the Murray, this historic town offers a fascinating paddle-steamer museum and the junction lookout.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow at least five to seven days to drive the full 700-kilometre run from Walgett to Wentworth, including stops at the key towns and national parks. The unsealed sections can be slow, so factor in extra time for detours and wildlife-spotting. Many travellers break the journey into three or four overnight stops, camping under the stars or staying in historic pubs. If you’re short on time, focus on the stretch between Bourke and Wentworth, which packs in the most river character and outback atmosphere.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Broken Hill – The Silver City is a short detour west, offering mining heritage, art galleries, and the eerie Living Desert sculptures.
- Mungo National Park – A World Heritage-listed landscape of lunettes and ancient human footprints, about 150 km south of the Darling River Run.
- Murray River National Park – Continue south from Wentworth into South Australia’s river country for more water-based adventures.
- White Cliffs – Famous for its opal mines and underground homes, this quirky town is a worthwhile side trip from Wilcannia.
- Cobar – A historic mining town with a grand heritage hotel and the Great Cobar Heritage Centre, located east of the run.
