Perched on the forested slopes of the Nanshan Mountains, Dalian Forest Zoo is a sprawling sanctuary that blends wildlife encounters with lush natural landscapes. It's one of China's most innovative zoos, where animals roam in spacious, open habitats that mimic their native environments. The zoo is divided into two main sections: the Safari Zone, where you can drive through and see lions, tigers, and bears from the safety of your car, and the Walking Zone, a beautifully landscaped area with winding paths, aviaries, and a giant panda house. With its hillside setting and sea views, the zoo offers a refreshing escape from the city and a fascinating glimpse into conservation efforts in northern China.
Highlights & What to See
- Giant Panda Pavilion – Home to several giant pandas, this modern facility lets you watch these charismatic creatures munch bamboo and play in climate-controlled enclosures.
- Safari Drive-Through – Drive your own car or take the zoo's shuttle through open enclosures where lions, Siberian tigers, and black bears roam close to the vehicle.
- Avian World – A massive walk-through aviary filled with colourful pheasants, cranes, and peacocks, set against a backdrop of waterfalls and native plants.
- Koala House – An unexpected treat – a dedicated habitat for koalas, complete with eucalyptus trees imported from Australia.
- Sea Lion Show – Daily performances in an amphitheatre overlooking the bay, where clever sea lions show off tricks and interact with trainers.
- Gondola Ride – A cable car glides over the treetops, offering panoramic views of the zoo, the coastline, and Dalian's skyline.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for a full day – at least six to eight hours – to cover both the Safari Zone and the Walking Zone without rushing. The zoo is large and hilly, so wear comfortable shoes and take breaks at the many shaded rest areas. Arrive early (the zoo opens at 8:30 am) to beat the crowds and catch the animals when they're most active. If you're short on time, focus on the Walking Zone and the gondola ride, which can be done in about four hours.
