Dalian, a vibrant port city on the Liaodong Peninsula, blends Russian and Japanese colonial architecture with a modern Chinese metropolis. Its dramatic coastline, dotted with sandy beaches and rocky headlands, offers a refreshing escape from the inland heat. Known for its seafood, beer culture, and seaside promenades, Dalian feels more like a European resort than a typical Chinese city. The mild climate and green spaces make it a favourite for outdoor activities, while the remnants of its colonial past provide a fascinating historical layer.
Highlights & What to See
- Xinghai Square – One of Asia's largest city squares, with a massive modern sculpture and sweeping views of the bay. Best visited in the evening when the fountains are lit.
- Dalian Beach & Binhai Road – A scenic coastal drive (or bike ride) that passes rocky coves and sandy beaches like Fujiazhuang and Bangchuidao. Stop for a seafood lunch at a beachside restaurant.
- Russian Street (Russian风情街) – A short but atmospheric street lined with early 20th-century Russian buildings, now housing souvenir shops and cafes. Great for photo ops.
- Dalian Modern Museum – Housed in a striking German-style building, this museum covers the city's history from Russian occupation to the present. Free entry.
- Discoveryland Theme Park – A large amusement park with roller coasters and a water park, popular with families. Allow a full day if you want to ride everything.
- Laohutan Ocean Park – A marine park with polar animals, a dolphin show, and a walk-through aquarium. Good for kids, but can be crowded on weekends.
Suggested Time to Spend
Two to three days is ideal for Dalian. Spend Day 1 exploring the city centre, Russian Street, and Xinghai Square. On Day 2, drive or cycle the Binhai Road, stopping at beaches and the Modern Museum. Add a third day for Discoveryland or Laohutan if travelling with children. Dalian makes a great 2-3 night stop on a longer self-drive trip along the Liaodong coast.
