In the heart of the Atherton Tablelands, the Curtain Fig Tree is a natural wonder that feels plucked from a fantasy novel. This colossal strangler fig, with its curtain-like cascade of aerial roots, stands as a living testament to the rainforest's power and patience. The tree is a key stop on the Waterfall Circuit, offering a cool, shaded walk that immerses you in the lush, ancient world of tropical North Queensland.
Highlights & What to See
- The Curtain Fig Tree itself: A massive strangler fig (Ficus virens) that has enveloped a host tree, its roots forming a dramatic curtain that drops over 15 metres. The boardwalk gives you a perfect vantage point to marvel at this botanical spectacle.
- Rainforest boardwalk: A short, wheelchair-accessible loop through dense, vine-laced rainforest. Keep an eye out for colourful kingfishers, brush-turkeys, and the occasional musky rat-kangaroo.
- Nearby crater lakes: Lake Eacham and Lake Barrine, both volcanic crater lakes, offer swimming, canoeing, and walking trails. They are part of the same ancient rainforest ecosystem.
- Yungaburra village: A charming historic town with a vibrant café scene, artisan galleries, and the famous Yungaburra Markets (held on the fourth Saturday of the month). Don't miss the platypus-viewing platform on Peterson Creek.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 30–40 minutes to walk the boardwalk and soak in the atmosphere. If you're combining with a visit to Yungaburra (just 5 minutes away) and a crater lake, a half-day is comfortable. The site is best visited in the morning when the light filters through the canopy and wildlife is most active. It's a perfect quick stop on a self-drive circuit of the Tablelands.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Lake Eacham & Lake Barrine: Volcanic crater lakes with walking tracks, picnic spots, and swimming. Lake Barrine also has a historic teahouse.
