On Lake Burley Griffin in central Canberra, the Captain Cook Memorial Jet is a spectacular water fountain that shoots a column of water 147 metres into the air. It was built in 1970 to mark the bicentenary of Captain James Cook's voyage along Australia's east coast. The jet is powered by two electric pumps and can be seen from many vantage points around the lake, especially when the wind catches the spray and creates rainbows.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allow 30 minutes to an hour to visit the jet and the adjacent memorial globe. It's a quick stop that fits easily into a larger day exploring Canberra's central attractions. For the best experience, plan to arrive when the jet is operating and take a stroll along the lake edge.
