On Lake Burley Griffin in central Canberra, the Captain Cook Memorial Jet is a spectacular water fountain that shoots a column of water 147 metres into the air. It was built in 1970 to mark the bicentenary of Captain James Cook's voyage along Australia's east coast. The jet is powered by two electric pumps and can be seen from many vantage points around the lake, especially when the wind catches the spray and creates rainbows.
Highlights & What to See
- Viewing the jet at its peak: The jet operates daily from 10am to 2pm (and until 4pm on weekends and public holidays, weather permitting). Time your visit for a calm day to see the full height of the plume.
- Regatta Point lookout: This is the closest public access point, offering excellent photo opportunities and a clear view of the jet against the backdrop of Black Mountain and the Telstra Tower.
- Captain Cook Memorial Globe: Adjacent to the jet at Regatta Point is a large bronze globe depicting Cook's voyages — a subtle but interesting historical marker.
- Evening illumination: The jet is lit up at night, creating a striking visual from across the lake. The lights cycle through colours on special occasions.
- Combining with lakeside walks: The surrounding Lake Burley Griffin foreshore is part of a network of walking and cycling paths, perfect for a relaxed afternoon.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 30 minutes to an hour to visit the jet and the adjacent memorial globe. It's a quick stop that fits easily into a larger day exploring Canberra's central attractions. For the best experience, plan to arrive when the jet is operating and take a stroll along the lake edge.
