Plunging 50 metres over a sheer granite cliff into a cool, fern-lined pool, Bridal Veil Falls is one of the most photogenic waterfalls in the New England region. Located in the Oxley Wild Rivers National Park, the falls are best seen after rain, when the water cascades like a delicate veil, catching rainbows in the spray. The short walk to the lookout is family-friendly, and the platform offers a perfect vantage point for photos. It’s a must-stop on a self-drive itinerary through the hinterland of the New South Wales mid-north coast.
Highlights & What to See
- Bridal Veil Falls Lookout: An easy 10-minute walk from the car park leads to a viewing platform with spectacular views of the falls and the gorge below.
- Oxley Wild Rivers National Park: The falls are just one of many waterfalls in this UNESCO World Heritage-listed wilderness; keep an eye out for lyrebirds and wallabies along the way.
- Gorge viewpoints: Several other lookouts along the escarpment offer panoramic vistas of the Apsley River Gorge, especially dramatic at sunset.
- Picnic area: A shaded spot near the car park with tables and BBQs, perfect for a lunch stop surrounded by eucalypt forest.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for about 30 minutes to 1 hour, which includes the short walk to the lookout, time to take photos, and a quick picnic. If you’re keen to explore more of Oxley Wild Rivers National Park, allow an extra 2–3 hours for nearby walks like the Lyrebird Lookout track or the longer Green Gully Trail. The falls are best visited in the morning when the light hits the water, or after a spell of rain for maximum flow.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Wollomombi Falls: Just a 15-minute drive away, these are even taller (220 metres) and offer a more dramatic plunge – combine for a waterfall double-header.
- Armidale: The nearest city, 30 minutes north, with excellent cafés, the New England Regional Art Museum, and the historic Armidale Cathedral.
- Oxley Wild Rivers National Park walks: Extend your visit with the Lyrebird Lookout walk (30 minutes) or the longer Green Gully Trail (3 hours return).
- Waterfall Way: The scenic drive from Coffs Harbour through Dorrigo and Ebor to Armidale passes many waterfalls and rainforests – a classic road trip route.
- Dorrigo National Park: About 1.5 hours east, with the Skywalk and Crystal Shower Falls, offering a completely different rainforest experience.
