Perched high above the New South Wales South Coast, Big Orange Lookout offers one of the region’s most breathtaking panoramas — a sweeping vista of the Pacific Ocean, dense eucalypt forests, and the undulating escarpment of the Budawang Range. Despite its quirky name (a nod to the giant orange-painted viewing platform), this is a serious lookout that rewards visitors with a front-row seat to spectacular sunrises and whale migrations (May–November). It’s a must-stop on any coastal road trip between Batemans Bay and Ulladulla.
Highlights & What to See
- The Lookout Platform: Climb the short but steep path to the distinctive orange structure — the colour makes it easy to spot from the highway. From the top, soak up 180-degree views over the Clyde River estuary, Pigeon House Mountain, and on clear days as far as Montague Island.
- Whale Watching: During migration season, grab a pair of binoculars and scan the ocean for humpbacks and southern right whales breaching offshore. The lookout’s elevated position is perfect for spotting them.
- Bushwalking Trails: The lookout is the start of several walks, including the 2 km return Big Orange Walk through scribbly gum and banksia forest, and the longer Pigeon House Mountain track (5 km return, moderate) that leads to a fire tower with even more epic views.
- Picnic Facilities: There are basic picnic tables and a grassy area — ideal for a packed lunch while you watch the clouds roll over the escarpment.
- Birdwatching: Keep an eye out for gang-gang cockatoos, yellow-tailed black cockatoos, and lyrebirds in the surrounding bushland.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 30–45 minutes at the lookout itself — enough time to walk up, take photos, and scan for whales. If you plan to do the Pigeon House Mountain walk, budget an extra 2–3 hours (start early in the morning to avoid the midday heat). Combine the lookout with a stop at the nearby Mogo Village or Clyde River kayaking for a half-day outing. It’s an easy, low-effort addition to a south coast itinerary.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Batemans Bay: The gateway to the Eurobodalla region, with great seafood, the Clyde River, and beaches like Surfside and Corrigans Beach (20 minutes north).
- Pebbly Beach: Famous for its friendly eastern grey kangaroos that laze on the sand — a 30-minute drive south in Murramarang National Park.
- Ulladulla: A coastal town with a working harbour, the Ulladulla Lighthouse, and the popular Warden Head walking track (40 minutes south).
- Morton National Park: Home to the iconic Pigeon House Mountain and the Budawang Range, offering remote hiking and camping (access via the lookout).
