Bendalong is a sleepy coastal hamlet on the New South Wales South Coast, prized for its uncrowded beaches, dense bushland, and a laid-back vibe that feels a world away from the holiday crowds further north. This is the kind of place where you kick off your shoes, listen to the waves, and let the days blur into a rhythm of swimming, fishing, and long walks along the sand.
Highlights & What to See
- Bendalong Beach – A sweeping crescent of pale sand backed by dunes and spotted gum forest. It's patrolled in summer, but even in peak season you'll find plenty of space to spread out. The southern end is a favourite for surfers when the swell's up.
- Manyana Beach – Just south of the village, this quieter stretch offers excellent rock-pooling at low tide and a calm lagoon where kids can paddle safely. The headland walk from Manyana to Bendalong rewards with whale sightings (May–November).
- Cunjurong Point – A rocky headland with panoramic views north to Jervis Bay and south to Ulladulla. It's a top spot for dawn photography and spotting seabirds riding the thermals.
- Bendalong Boat Harbour – A sheltered inlet popular with local fishers. You can launch a kayak or tinny here, or simply watch the pelicans jostle for scraps at the boat ramp.
- Lake Conjola – A short drive inland, this large coastal lake is perfect for paddleboarding, kayaking, and fishing for bream and flathead. The lake's calm waters are also ideal for a gentle afternoon swim.
Suggested Time to Spend
Bendalong is a perfect two- to three-day stop on a South Coast road trip. Spend your first day exploring the beaches and headlands, then devote a second day to Lake Conjola or a hike in the nearby bush. If you're after pure relaxation, you could easily stretch it to four days, alternating between beach time and lazy café breakfasts in the village. For a quick overnight, arrive by midday, enjoy an afternoon swim and sunset at Cunjurong Point, then head off the next morning.
