Barooga is a laid-back Murray River town in southern New South Wales, just across the border from Victoria. It’s a classic river getaway, where the pace slows to the rhythm of paddle steamers and the splash of skiers. With its broad, sandy riverbanks and a backdrop of citrus orchards and vineyards, Barooga feels like a sun-drenched secret that locals are happy to keep.
Highlights & What to See
- Murray River: The star attraction. Swim, fish, kayak or simply laze on the sandbars. In summer, the river hums with houseboats and water-skiers.
- Barooga Golf Course: A challenging 18-hole layout that meanders alongside the river – expect kangaroos as gallery.
- Cobram-Barooga District: Twin towns split by the river. Cobram (Vic) has a bustling main street and the historic Cobram Station, while Barooga offers a quieter, leafy charm.
- Local Wineries & Orchards: The surrounding Murray Valley produces excellent citrus and cool-climate wines. Stop at a cellar door for a tasting or pick your own fruit in season.
- Barooga Sports Club: A social hub with dining, live music and a relaxed atmosphere – perfect for a cold beer after a day on the water.
Suggested Time to Spend
Barooga is best as a 2–3 day stopover. Use it as a base to explore the Murray River corridor: spend one day on the water, another visiting wineries and the Cobram markets, and a third simply unwinding. If you’re on a longer self-drive, a single overnight is enough to catch a sunset over the river and a meal at the club.
