Rolling green hills, misty crater lakes, and waterfall-laced rainforests define the Atherton Tablelands, a cool, fertile plateau an hour inland from Cairns. This is where Queensland’s tropical north sheds its humidity and reveals a patchwork of dairy farms, volcanic soils, and quirky small towns. The Tablelands feel like a different world from the coast—more laid-back, more rural, and dotted with natural wonders that reward a self-drive exploration.
Highlights & What to See
- Waterfall Circuit: A loop road taking in Millaa Millaa, Zillie, and Ellinjaa Falls—classic curtain falls plunging into plunge pools perfect for a refreshing dip.
- Curtain Fig Tree: A giant strangler fig whose aerial roots form a sweeping curtain; an easy boardwalk leads you around this 500-year-old natural sculpture.
- Lake Eacham & Lake Barrine: Two pristine volcanic crater lakes surrounded by rainforest. Swim, kayak, or walk the circuit trails; keep an eye out for musky rat-kangaroos.
- Yungaburra: A heritage-listed village with art-deco facades, a Sunday market, and platypus-viewing platforms on Peterson Creek.
- Undara Volcanic National Park: About 90 minutes southwest, this park preserves the world’s longest lava-tube cave system—guided tours take you into the dark, cathedral-like chambers.
Suggested Time to Spend
Give yourself at least two full days to explore the Tablelands properly. Use Day 1 for the Waterfall Circuit and the crater lakes, staying overnight in Yungaburra or Atherton. Day 2 can focus on the Curtain Fig, a morning at Lake Eacham, and a drive to Undara if you have time. With three days you could add a farm stay, visit the Granite Gorge for rock-wallabies, or explore the misty Mount Hypipamee Crater. The region is best savoured slowly—don’t rush between stops.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
