Alishan National Scenic Area
Alishan National Scenic Area is Taiwan’s mist-shrouded mountain retreat, famed for its sunrise views, ancient red cypress forests, and narrow-gauge railway that switchbacks through bamboo groves and tea plantations. This cool highland sanctuary offers a serene escape from the subtropical lowlands, with trails that lead to colossal tree trunks and lookout points where the sea of clouds rolls beneath your feet.
Highlights & What to See
- Alishan Forest Railway: Ride the historic narrow-gauge train from Chiayi up through spiraling tunnels and past hillside villages – the Zhushan branch at dawn is a rite of passage for sunrise seekers.
- Sunrise at Zhushan Station: Join the pre-dawn crowd for the famous spectacle of the sun rising over a sea of clouds, with the Yushan range silhouetted on the horizon.
- Sacred Tree & Giant Trees Trail: Walk among towering red cypress and Taiwan fir, some over a thousand years old; the remnants of the Sacred Tree (a fallen giant) are a poignant highlight.
- Sisters Ponds: Two serene, emerald-green ponds set in a quiet forest glade, linked by a short boardwalk – perfect for a peaceful stroll.
- Shouzhen Temple: A Taoist temple with ornate carvings and sweeping views over the valley; it’s a popular stop for tea breaks and photo ops.
- Tea Plantations & Oolong Tasting: The surrounding slopes are covered in tea bushes; stop by a local farm to sample high-mountain oolong, a specialty of the region.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors allocate one full day and a night to experience Alishan properly. Arrive in the afternoon, explore the forest trails and temples, then stay overnight at one of the park’s lodges or guesthouses. Rise before 5 am to catch the sunrise train and return for a morning hike before lunch. If you’re short on time, a dawn visit from Chiayi is possible via the early train, but it’s rushed. For a deeper immersion, two days let you hike the longer Tashan Trail and enjoy the sunset from Chushan.
